Response Paper #2

Due: Wednesday, January 23

~Note: This is a lengthy, dense reading. Please allow plenty of time to complete this assignment.

1. Read “All Over the Place” in The Lure of the Local by Lucy R. Lippard (pages 4-20).

2. Read actively. Take notes in the margin, note questions, underline ideas of interest, and look up unfamiliar words and references.

3. Write a response to each of the following questions (and be ready to discuss them in class). Illustrate your points with specific examples from your own experience.
· What is the difference between “permanence” and “multicenteredness”? How are these ideas related?
· What are some of the contrasting ways in which people experience “the lure of the local”?
· According to Lippard, how is “landscape” different from “place”?
· “The real challenge,” writes Lippard, “is to reinstate a spiritual relationship with that which is close and familiar.” Why do you think this is a challenge in contemporary life?

4. Read your responses and evaluate:
· Have you expressed yourself clearly?
· Are your responses based on an accurate reading of the text?
· Have you illustrated your points with specific examples from your own experience?

5. Revise as needed.

6. Proofread your revised draft. (It may be helpful to exchange papers with a classmate.) Correct errors of spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

7. Save a copy of the paper on your computer, and print a copy to bring to class. (Your paper should be double-spaced, with one-inch margins. At the top of the page, please include your name, the date, “Seattle Arts Ecology,” and “Response Paper #2.”)
